Expert Talks: 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Close: 6:30pm

Location: The Lounge, Dryden Enterprise Centre, Nottingham Trent University, Dryden Street, Nottingham, NG1 4FQ

The Nottingham Caves Technical Guide produced by Locus Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Nottingham City Council, with funding from Historic England, will be launched in December 2022. The guide provides a technical introduction to the key issues and opportunities associated with the conservation and use of Nottingham’s internationally important caves. The guide also aims to establish a foundation for increased dialogue about the city’s caves amongst owners, tenants, enthusiasts and specialists alike.

To celebrate the upcoming launch, you are invited to a free workshop event which will bring together cave experts and people in the city who have access to caves.

The event will begin with a drop-in workshop where attendees can receive advice about the wide range of uses of caves and the practicalities of their management. The workshop will be followed by a series of short talks from a number of experts, including representatives from the British Geological Survey, York Archaeology, Locus Consulting (a planning and heritage consultancy), and the City of Caves Research Project at the University of Nottingham. These talks will cover a wide variety of topics including the geology of Nottingham’s caves, their history, survey work and current uses.

“Nottingham’s extensive network of caves is a unique heritage asset of national significance which needs to be safeguarded for future generations. We have more caves made by people here than any other British city. They are an important feature of Nottingham which complement development, encourage tourism and provide research opportunities. We are keen to make more of this amazing asset, but also to ensure they are preserved for future generations through careful management and sensitive, creative development. This workshop is a way for people in Nottingham who are lucky enough to own caves to gain expert guidance on how best to conserve, develop and use them creatively and appropriately.”  Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture & Planning, Cllr Pavlos Kotsonis.
