The Sandstone Caves of Nottingham – Autumn Talk
November 27 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
During the last thousands of years, hundreds of caves have been cut into the Nottingham Castle Sandstone, beneath the area now occupied by the city centre. Many of the older caves were subsequently adapted for various phases of contrasting use. The surviving caves now form a valuable part of Nottingham’s cultural heritage and teams of amateur archaeologists continue to reveal more historical information as they unearth new caves. Dr Tony Waltham has written the standard book on the city’s caves. Until retirement he was a lecturer in engineering geology at Nottingham Trent University and now leads geological tours and lectures on cruise ships.
