Nottingham Park Residents Association
Objectives: We have defined our role under the following 4 headings.
Protecting the aesthetic and environment of the Park Estate
This covers all planning issues, from new developments to refurbishments, extensions and works to trees. We are not passing judgement, but working in conjunction with the planning authorities to inform and pass comment on key decisions where they make reference to The Park Plan.
Development of Communication networks
Park News is the Park's main mouthpiece, but we are also now providing a regular on-line newsletter to supplement this and 'fill in the gaps' every 2 months. We co-ordinate posters or flyers that are needed to publicise any events and act as a communication channel between the NPEL and Park residents when this is needed. We also lobby and engage with external bodies whose actions and policies might impinge on The Park Estate.
Encouragement of social activities and events
We organise regular social events and encourage others to do the same. There are many social networks within the Park, and we cannot reach all of them, Our regular history and heritage talks are very popular and we aim to expand this into other fields in conjunction with other bodies and groups. In particular we try to contact and welcome new residents to make them aware of the events on offer.
Development of a sustainable community
A particular role we are keen to grow is that of sustainable community co-ordinator. There are many potential projects which we are promoting, with new members coming on board to help manage initiative such as garden share, community purchasing and a Park composting centre. We are open to any suggestions on this front.
The Park Conservation Trust
A charitable Trust whose objectives are the preservation and conservation of The Park. The Trust was set up in 1992 to preserve and enhance the architectural and historical interest in The Park, a private, planned nineteenth century villa estate with 350 surviving houses built between 1820 and 1918. Trustees are appointed from Nottingham Park Estate Limited, a management company run by the residents plus representatives of The Nottingham Park Residents Association and local architectural and historical societies.
The area derives its name and origin from a royal park attached to Nottingham Castle which is built on a prominent sandstone outcrop overlooking the estate. Despite the proximity of The Park to the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the unusual ‘bowl’ like topographical features and mature landscaping have helped it remain a separate entity and an oasis of leafy calm, distinct from the noise and dense urban forms that surround it. Over the years the Trust has prompted and financed a number of projects including:
-
Cataloguing estate related archive material.
-
Improvements to Newcastle & Lincoln Circus.
-
